Shuzenji Hot Spring

Legendary waters gushing at the gate of an ancient temple

Said to be the oldest hot spring in Izu, Shuzenji Onsen is named after the Zen temple Shuzenji established in 807 by the priest, artist, scholar and engineer, Kobo Daishi. Visitors to the area are welcomed by the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the temple gate and the babbling of the Katsura River flowing through the heart of the hot spring town.

Along with Shuzenji Temple, the symbol of this onsen area is Tokko-no-Yu, the original source of volcanic waters gushing forth from the middle of the Katsura riverbed, flowing forth to feed Shuzenji Onsen. According to legend, Kobo Daishi brought out these waters by crushing rocks in the river.

People love to stop by the footbath nearby.

The hot spring is of a pure, mild-alkaline quality, known for being gentle on skin. Therapeutic effects also include alleviation of sensitivity to cold, neuralgia, and muscle pain.

The spot is infamous as the place where Minamoto no Yoriie, the second shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate, was captured and assassinated amid political upheaval. The area is also a renowned place loved by great writers such as Ryunosuke Akutagawa and Yasunari Kawabata. Many works have found inspiration in this region.

A 300m promenade stretches along the river for a walk through the bamboo grove, illuminated at night. Take in the stunning scenery of each season on a stroll through the plum garden, autumn leaves and a wealth of other natural wonders.
